Volunteer Finance Director

 As part of the Board of Directors, the Volunteer Finance Director provides governance and financial oversight to Dial West Cheshire, accepting legal authority (jointly with other Board Directors) for the company and to ensure that Dial West Cheshire operates in pursuit of its charitable objects as set out in the Articles of Association.

What will I be doing?

The Volunteer Finance Director will take a lead role on the Board of Directors to assist the charity to deliver on its governance, focusing on oversight of its financial goals and responsibilities. Working in partnership with the Finance Manager and Chief Officer this role will:

  • Assist and advise in the formation of the Charity’s strategy with regards to ensuring that the Charity has the resources to deliver the strategy.
  • Ensure that the Board receives appropriate budgetary and financial information on the activities of the charity including Annual Accounts.
  • Ensure the accounts are prepared and disclosed in the form required by funders and the relevant statutory bodies.
  • Recommend to the Board appropriate accounting procedures, controls and policies consistent with the scheme of delegation.
  • Oversee the appointment of auditors and review on a regular basis.
  • Ensure that the Charity monitors the performance of its investments and sets an appropriate reserves policy.
  • Ensure that all equipment and assets are adequately maintained and accounted for.
  • Ensure that the Board is aware of its financial duties and responsibilities and the need to comply with all legislation.
  • Ensure that all financial policies, procedures and the appointment of external financial advisors are reviewed on a regular basis.
  • Ensure that the Board’s scheme of delegation is reviewed on a regular basis.

Additional responsibilities as a Board Director:

  • Ensure Dial West Cheshire complies with its governing document, charity law, company law and any other relevant legislation or regulations.
  • Ensure Dial West Cheshire pursues its objects as defined in its governing document.
  • Ensure resources are applied exclusively in pursuance of the objects.
  • Assist with providing strategic direction, setting overall policy, defining goals and evaluation performance against agreed targets.
  • Ensure financial stability and that funds are used for proper purposes.
  • Attend Board and other relevant meetings, scrutinizing papers in advance and actively contributing where appropriate.
  • Safeguard the organisation’s good name and values.
  • Appoint the Chief Officer and monitor his/her performance.
  • Represent the charity at meetings and events and be an ambassador for the organisation and the community.

What skills and personal qualities will I need?

It is important that a diverse set of skills is represented amongst the Board.  It is expected that Board members work as a team, such that they can draw on different skills depending on the task in hand. For this role, Dial West Cheshire seeks an individual with:

  • A knowledge and experience of finance and accounting.

How much time will I need to commit?

6 hours per week (to include meetings and associated tasks)
