Jo Swift has been a dedicated volunteer at Dial West Cheshire for six years, a time she has enjoyed so much that this year she decided to go even further for us and complete a sponsored marathon cycle.
Training was by no means a challenge but Jo found that having a cause to focus on gave her real motivation and as the big day grew closer, her nerves ramped up as she didn’t want to let anyone down.
Bright and early on Sunday 27th May, a day set to be a scorcher, Jo and her mascot Millie the millipede set off on the 26.2mile course around the outskirts of Chester. We were cheering them both on and following their progress at every moment.
As though the gruelling 26.2miles wasn’t challenging enough, Jo had to persevere through the beating sun only to then be soaked through in a huge downpour. Keeping Dial in her mind kept her moving and she completed the marathon in an applause-worthy nine hours. Not only that, she raised a huge £246 for Dial West Cheshire in the process.
This funding will go a long way in helping us to continue to provide the valuable services that we do to the people of our own community. When we asked Jo what she would say to anyone else considering a challenge like this, she said “Go for it. If you’re physically capable, absolutely take on the challenge.”
Everyone at Dial would like to say a massive thank you to Jo for taking on such a huge challenge and for raising these valuable funds. A little birdie has also told us this isn’t the end of her fundraising challenges either! Next year Jo is planning to do the marathon again alongside a partner who will be running the course. Let the training begin!
We are always looking for ways of raising funds, as a largely volunteer-led team, we simply could not continue to provide our services without fundraising. If you think you would like to take on a challenge and cross something off your bucket list while making a real difference for the people who use our services, get in touch with our fundraising team who would love to hear from you and work with you to achieve your goal!
